Mexican Horseshoes

How to Play and How to Make the Pits

Picture
A great back yard game, especially for family and friend gatherings, and anyone can play!
Back in the late 80's, maybe the early '90's, our good friends, the Doupe's, had us over for a get-together, and they were playing this most unusual game that they called "Mexican Horseshoes".  Great for all sorts of events such as reunions, parties, or even wakes.

Well, this silly game became a staple in my group of friends, and then within my  extended family.  I constructed a set of "pits", as did my brother, brother-in-law, uncle, dad, and my son/son-in-law/myself made a team-effort pair as well.  It turns out that the pits are "inheritable", as they have already been passed down, and who would want to part with these family heirlooms?

Disclaimer: The term "Mexican" as this is the name of the game, is only used positively, because Westerman's Week loves our from-south-of-the-border friends, compatriots, and co-workers.

Measure the pits 12 feet apart.  Once you have them measured once, you can step it off for future non-tape measured placement (i.e. 12.5 shoe to shoe steps).
So that is it.  The pits are definitely a weekend project, but they last a long time if you take care of them (stored properly, out of the elements).  They have provided us countless opportunities for fun, friendly  and competitive times at all sorts of gatherings.  They even lend themselves to some small wagering.

I purchased the washers at a fastener store (ironically called "Fasteners"), as they are an industrial washer for holding down light poles, or some such heavy use.  The associate at the counter may look at you funny if he asks you what you plan to do with them.

One last note, store the pits hole to hole, spiders ya know.
